Singing in Latin no problem for Tre-Belle
Singing in Latin is all in a day’s work for a Whitby performer.
Karyn Andreassend is one third of the pop-opera trio TreBelle, who are performing at Massey University’s graduation ceremony in Wellington this week.
Andreassend said singing the traditional university song, Gaudeamus, would be a first for the group.
‘‘We have previously sung in Latin, so learning the text will not be too big a challenge compared to some of the languages we’ve performed in,’’ she said.
‘‘We are really looking forward to it.’’
The Wellington-based trio of Andreassend, Jennifer Little and Jess Segal have been performing operatic classics, musical theatre and the latest chart hits since 2009.
Each of the women has sung operatic classics in languages ranging from Russian to Spanish, and collectively they have adopted a universal outlook to learning and performing music.
Andreassend, who has a graduate diploma of teaching, said performing at the ceremony would be like reliving her own graduation.
The women organise the logistics for their performances, including creating their own musical arrangements, choosing costumes and filling out tax returns.
They also manage their own bookings – they have performed in Australia, Malaysia and at the World of Wearable Arts show in Wellington.
‘‘Being a small country, people enjoy dealing with the performers directly.’’
Once they are on stage TreBelle take charge of their musical interpretations to create a memorable sound.
‘‘We’ve spent so much time performing together we’re really like three sisters.
‘‘It’s really great being on stage together and being able to sing in sync with each other. By using our classical technique and then altering it to blend, it can sound like one voice and it represents the ultimate in teamwork.’’
The group will be performing to 600 people at two graduation ceremonies at the Michael Fowler Centre on May 26.
