Our congratulations go to the new entrants class at St Theresa’s primary school in Plimmerton. As readers will see in our story on page 9, the thoughtful and diligent youngsters won a New Zealand Sign Language in Schools award last month.

The awards acknowledge the efforts of those committed to the promotion and progress of sign language and deaf culture in New Zealand. The children’s efforts were given impetus because there is a deaf pupil among their classmates.

The St Theresa’s 5-year-olds have spent an entire day signing, and have presented a school assembly entirely in sign.

The school hosts a sign language club during Monday lunchtimes which up to 40 children attend.

The principal and teachers at St Theresa’s are to be congratulated for their enlightened attitude towards sign language, which is under-rated in New Zealand society. It is an official language, but is often paid little more then lip service.
