Big Village Project offers helping hand

Kapi-Mana News - - FRONT PAGE - VIRGINIA FALLON

It takes a village to raise a child and Dennis Makalio Jnr thinks Porirua fits the bill. Makalio is the man behind the The Big Village Project Facebook page set up to help Porirua people help each other.

‘‘I read the African proverb about taking a village to raise a child,’’ he said. ‘‘Porirua is a tight community when it wants to be.’’

The premise of the project is for people to donate small amounts of money, which can then be given as food or petrol vouchers to those who need a hand.

Makalio posts photos of the project’s bank account on the Facebook page so donors can see where their money goes.

‘‘It’s set up to help with the little things, not the big emergencies.’’

He said it was not hard for people to make a difference in their community.

‘‘I was hoping to just put it out there for people to put $1 a week into the account for things like grocery and petrol vouchers.’’

Makalio said although he was keen to avoid the limelight, he did enjoy being able to hand over the vouchers.

Porirua City is urged to get behind The Big Village Project.
