Accused goes from hospital to court
The man charged with reckless driving causing death after an accident in Porirua on May 21, has left hospital to attend a hearing of the charge against him.
Damian Andrew Lawson, 42, moved with difficulty and wore a neck brace as he entered the dock at the Porirua District Court on Thursday.
Lawson, from Levin, is charged with reckless driving causing the death of a woman whose name is suppressed. She died after a police chase on May 21 when a car crashed on Kenepuru Drive, Porirua. He had been in hospital since. Lawson did not plead to the charge and is due to return to court on July 1.
He is formally in custody in the meantime but is staying at a rehabilitation ward, the court was told previously.
Police are asking for the name of the victim, 21, to be permanently suppressed. The court is due to hear that application on June 22.
