Ac­cused goes from hospi­tal to court

The man charged with reck­less driv­ing caus­ing death af­ter an ac­ci­dent in Porirua on May 21, has left hospi­tal to at­tend a hear­ing of the charge against him.

Damian An­drew Law­son, 42, moved with dif­fi­culty and wore a neck brace as he en­tered the dock at the Porirua Dis­trict Court on Thurs­day.

Law­son, from Levin, is charged with reck­less driv­ing caus­ing the death of a woman whose name is sup­pressed. She died af­ter a po­lice chase on May 21 when a car crashed on Kenepuru Drive, Porirua. He had been in hospi­tal since. Law­son did not plead to the charge and is due to re­turn to court on July 1.

He is for­mally in cus­tody in the mean­time but is stay­ing at a re­ha­bil­i­ta­tion ward, the court was told pre­vi­ously.

Po­lice are ask­ing for the name of the vic­tim, 21, to be per­ma­nently sup­pressed. The court is due to hear that ap­pli­ca­tion on June 22.
