Learning about cats and dogs
It’s all about looking after kittens and puppies these holidays at Porirua’s Animates Pet Store.
Last school holidays lizards took centre stage, but this time children can learn how to care for much cuddlier, fluffier pets.
Assistant manager Nikki Froom said children loved visiting the store at any time but especially enjoyed coming for the school holiday events.
‘‘We have face-painting, crafts and a talk about caring for cats and dogs, kittens and puppies.
‘‘We keep the talk quite short and we’re hoping to have a kitten and maybe some puppies in store as well for the kids to meet.’’
Froom said Animates had a great relationship with the SPCA and put their kittens up for adoption from the store.
‘‘We help with their masses of animals by purchasing them then adopting them from the shop.’’
The best part about working in a pet shop was talking to customers about their own animals, she said.
‘‘I love it, you don’t get a lot of grumpy people, it’s all about their rabbit, guinea pig and puppies.’’
She said the sessions were a great way to introduce kids to the skills they needed to be a nurturing parent and each child that attended would get a certificate to take home.
The sessions will take place at 11am on September 29 and October 6, no bookings are required, but Animates recommend you get in early.
Since 2010, more than 10,000 animals have been adopted to Animates customers and more than $300,000 has been raised for the SPCA through Animates stores.
