All natural and healthy earns Las Vegas trip

Ricky Kee-Sue loves being allnatural.

The Plimmerton 25-year-old is a panelbeater by day and bodybuilder by night.

Competing in his first two bodybuilding competitions just three years ago he came fifth.

Not discouraged, he worked hard and at the recent International Natural Bodybuilding Association South Pacific Championships in Taupo he realised his potential.

Kee-Sue took out first place in his division and qualified to represent his country in Las Vegas in November at the Natural Olympia Bodybuilding Competition.

He will joined by his partner, Janelle Cheesman, who also won her class in Taupo.

More than 1000 entrants from across the world take part at the Natural Olympia competition, at which participants are drug tested before and after competing.

‘‘It’s a great opportunity for us to really test ourselves against the best,’’ Kee-Sue said.

Flatting with bodybuilders three years ago put him on this path.

‘‘I decided to give it a go and I was hooked in pretty quickly. It took me a while to really knuckle down because I was just a skinny white boy, but I did and I’m pleased with the results,’’ he said.

‘‘It’s great that I can do something like this with Janelle too - we have a common goal together.’’

Kee-Sue said bodybuilding was a sport with a healthy membership and he was constantly being asked by fellow gym-goers how they could take part.

Cheesman, 24, from the Hutt Valley, weighed 73 kilograms before embarking on her bodybuilding journey,

She lost 17kg in a seven-month transformation.

In a rare feat, she came first in two novices sections and then won the fitness and overall titles in Taupo.

Although some women would be put off by the thought of getting up on stage in a bikini, Cheesman had no qualms.

‘‘I wanted to get up there and show I have lost all this weight, so for me it was very rewarding,’’ she said.

‘‘It helped boost my confidence because not many people could achieve what I did.’’

The pair need $5000 to go to Las Vegas and have set up a fundraising page.
