White Ribbon events
A White Ribbon Family day will take place at Te Rauparaha Park on November 20.
Organiser Cathy Roa from Porirua Safer City Trust said while the event, which runs from noon till 3pm, had a serious message, it was aimed at being a fun event for the city.
‘‘Yes, we want to hammer home the message about violence against women being unacceptable, but it’s important to attract residents to have a nice day out and have a few fun things to do.’’
The day will also feature a ride, with more than 30 White Ribbon Riders coming into Porirua at midday, headed by mayor Mike Tana.
Entertainer Frankie Stevens will be MC on a stage set up at the park and will perform with Maori Musician of the Year Ranea Aperahama.
There would be other acts, Roa said, along with activities such as bouncy castles and slides.
Sausage sizzles, popcorn, candy floss, food trucks and facepainting will also be available.
The Western Bay Street Rodders will be present with a selection of hot rods, as well as riders from the Wellington Harley Owners Group.
Roa said many community groups will be present on the day, promoting their own messages.
‘‘It’s taken a lot to get to this point and it will be a very cool event. We hope many will get out to enjoy the afternoon.’’
