FROM THE EDITOR
Last week was certainly a blinder, from an earthquake that woke us up with a huge fright early on Monday morning, to gale force winds and two floods battering the coast.
Before last week some people may have believed the chance of a natural disaster was low, or were "optimistic" they wouldn’t be caught in one.
But we have had a wake up call and as work goes on to see how badly damaged buildings are - what needs to come down and what just needs some reinforcing work - this is an ideal time to have a look at your ‘‘go bag’’.
Procrastination, or lack of money can hold back some households but last week’s events show we can’t use that as an excuse.
There are some basic things you need in a disaster kit including three days of food and three litres of water per person per day but you can find a full list at getthru.govt.nz.
This is the time to be prepared. Start putting together your kit now.
