FROM THE EDITOR
As I write this the sun is finally shining, for what feels like the first time this year.
The weather is predicted to become more settled and warm, meaning many boaties will be heading out to sea for a spot of fishing or swimming or simply to relax on the water.
However, far too many people do not know or follow maritime rules and safety guidelines.
This week we publish the first in a series of six articles on water safety. They will highlight why there is a need for lifejackets, what the issues are with excessive alcohol on board and what the rules and responsibilities are for skippers.
Water safety is not something to shrug off and label ‘‘it will never happen to me’’.
Too many New Zealanders die in the water each year.
Let’s not add any more of our boaties to the terrible statistics.
