Mayor Mike Tana’s willingness to tackle begging in Porirua must come as welcome news to business owners worried about the issue.

Last week the Kapi-Mana News spent time talking to people at Cannons Creek Shopping Centre and a few things stood out.

They were passionate about their suburb, their businesses and each other, but they need support.

Most business owners were quick to commend the local police for their work, but said it was time for council to play its part.

Begging is a social issue and, while a ban might not be the answer, the problem can’t be ignored.

Cannons Creek Shopping Centre is a bustling, vibrant oasis, providing important facilities to the suburb and it deserves to be supported.

Everyone has a part to play in that.
