Loose tiles see pool in dry spell for next month

Loose tiles have taken the Can­nons Creek Pool out of ac­tion for a month.

Porirua Coun­cil’s op­er­at­ing of­fi­cer Tam­sin Evans said the pool was re­filled after its bian­nual main­te­nance at the end of Jan­uary

When work­ers drained the pool to in­spect the dam­age it was ap­par­ent more of the tiles were af­fected and the pool floor needed to be retiled, she said.

‘‘This had led to the need to retile the pool floor.’’

She be­lieved the dam­age could have been caused dur­ing the Novem­ber earth­quakes but the tiles were kept in place be­cause of the water pres­sure.

‘‘The tiles were 49 years old and not se­cured with a wa­ter­tight grout and epoxy.

‘‘This technology was un­avail­able at the time the tiles were fit­ted.’’
