Does Porirua need an A and E service?
We took to Neighbourly to ask if you agreed with Porirua mayor Mike Tana’s call for a full accident and emergency service at Kenepuru Hospital.
The reaction was almost universal: Porirua people don’t want to rely on Wellington Hospital anymore.
HELEN TWEEDY FROM WHITBY
Absolutely - especially if a natural disaster were to occur we need something north of Wellington.
NICKYWILLMOTT FROM TAWA
The main Wellington Hospital should have been based here to better serve the growing population north.
KATHERINE DOBSON FROM TITAHI BAY
Makes sense. They tell everyone to be prepared. This needs to happen. The November quake proved this is an important issue. We have also had flooding that has cut Porirua off.
AROHA HEITA FROM CANNONS CREEK
Yes because it’s too far to travel into Wellington with my children.
PAUL RUSHWORTH FROM WHITBY
How much additional tax are you prepared to pay for this? What if more E.Ds meant that we had less experienced staff with less supervision? I amnot trying to be picky; but statements like Mike Tana’s are in a vacuum, and genuinely not useful. Running 2 (or 3) E.D departments is not a zero sum game, and Politicians should be better than that.
RICHARD BROWN FROM AOTEA
It makes sense - wouldn’t it take pressure off Wellington - it will need investment, but it’s probably well worth it.
LYNN SHUGG FROM TAWA
This is a definite yes from me. Why would there be any questions regarding another A&E. The wait in Wellington now is extreme and with only more growth coming in the future this will only increase.
CHRIS HOOPER FROM WHITBY
Absolutely. Imagine all the people who currently use the After Hours having to go all the way to Newtown and join the queue there. It is crazy that the issue is even on the table.
DMITRI KOUDRIN FROM TAWA
Yes, Wellington is much too far away to travel for an emergency of any type!
LOUISAMESSENGER FROM CANNONS CREEK
Yes I totally agree there should be one here 100 per cent.
SHIRLEY TRAVIS FROM TAWA
Absolutely it does. The waiting time is way too long at Wellington Hospital and it is a long way to travel for us in the northern suburbs. If we were cut off, and couldn’t get to Wellington or the Hutt then what?
Not only that, but if you have sick kids in the middle of the night you don’t want to have to travel too far. I understand finances may be playing a big part, but not at the expense of the community.
