The disparity between kids’ health in Porirua is heartbreaking.
In just one year, about a third of young people have experienced stress that has a negative effect on them always or most of the time.
Capital and Coast District Health Board saw 165 people hospitalised per 100,000 for selfharm between 2010 and 2014 - way above the national rate of 64 per 100,000.
However the rate of suicide for those aged up to 24 is at a rate of 5.81, significantly below the national rate of 8.75.
These details and more are highlighted in a report on Porirua’s children and young people that is as broad as it is sobering.
The council should be commended for its forwardthinking in investing in this type of research that will help it shape the lives of future generations through its LongTerm Plan.
