The city council will be feeling under pressure to create a Waitangi Day event to replace the Festival of the Elements after the voluntary group that drove it for 25 years pulled out this month.

With the event now attracting 30,000 people, the workload just got too much for them.

It’s understood the Porirua Arts Council had warned the city council that things were getting too much, so more might come out in the wash about why things got to this point.

The event cost $175,000 but roughly only a third of that came from the council. It might have to look at either increasing its stake or finding support from another charitable group to allow the event to apply for various grants and funds to make up the difference.

The Mayor says the city will find a way, and with so much public support, it will be good to see what the council comes up with.
