‘‘It’s a truck and a chipper and they’re both quite heavy, so there’s probably about 13 or 14 tonne just sitting there on the driveway.’’

AWellington City Council truck slid and tipped on to part of a house in the northern suburb of Tawa.

The crash happened about 9am on Thursday as council staff arrived with a big truck pulling a woodchipper, to trim back a tree on a steep suburban street.

Two cranes arrived to begin setting up to lift the 14-tonne combo off the garage on Thursday afternoon.

Wellington City Council spokesman Paul Andrews said it was fortunate no-one was injured in the accident.

‘‘It’s a truck and a chipper and they’re both quite heavy, so there’s probably about 13 or 14 tonne just sitting there on the driveway.’’

In the course of setting up the worksite, the truck had slid a few metres down a small but steep grassy hill at the front of a home.

‘‘It’s slid down the bank. Fortunately, it’s resting on the side of the garage just down the drive.

‘‘So we’ve got two cranes in and they’ll be lifting both the truck and the chipper out at the same time.’’

The council will be investigating how it happened.
