Sinkhole in car park
A pizza-sized sinkhole appeared in a car park in Porirua.
Porirua City Council workers blocked off the hole in the tarseal at the main entrance of the Dolly Varden car park in Mana last Tuesday morning.
There was a bigger hole in a water pipe below it, which was repaired by Friday.
Council chief operating officer Tamsin Evans said the car park would be closed for a day or so, while staff from Wellington Water repaired the broken pipe.
Underground erosion was the direct cause, perhaps from a natural water source, but in this case it was more likely to be from the damaged pipe.
A pump was on site and sewer flows were under control.
