Furthering children’s education is a no-brainer.
The council has backed the community bus for at least another year, and Mayor Mike Tana plans to keep an eye on the cost to ratepayers of the benefit it brings. It shouldn’t be hard. The benefits last a lifetime while additional sponsorship - about half the $60,000 running cost - has already been confirmed from various community groups for the next year.
Councillor Anita Baker, who has been helping to organise the support, was not yet willing to say where the money had come from.
Only that she had another meeting lined up with another potential funder later this month.
Sometimes it can be hard to see the needs of people beyond our own front doors, so well done.
Too many children face obstacles to getting an education through no fault of their own, and this service can go a long way to helping the future of Porirua.
