Big things do come in small packages as attested by the rugby spectacle that was the recent Christian Cullen Junior 7’s Tournament.

Held at Ngati Toa Domain on June 4 by Paremata Plimmerton Rugby Club, 62 teams from 19 clubs took to the field for 157 games of sevens rugby.

It featured junior teams aged seven to 12, and included rising talent as far afield as Te Kawau RFC from the Manawatu to local neighbours Norths.

Paremata Plimmerton chairman Dave Ives said the tournament is one of the biggest events on the club’s fundraising calendar, and has been a favourite since its inception in the 80’s.

‘‘The organisers out-did themselves, it was a great day; Christian Cullen was there, the kids were well supported and thanks to people’s support, we raised $2000 to put towards our Under 13 team’s end of year trip. Rugby was the winner of the day.’’

Norths took out the under-8, under-10 and under-12 grades while Paremata Plimmerton won the under-9 division with Paraparaumu showing their strength to win in under-11.
