The Porirua College First XV rugby team retained the Beard Trophy after handing Mana College a resounding defeat on home soil last Wednesday, winning 41-5.

The second round win for Porirua in the First XVWellington Co-ed Cup was well received by home fans.

Following a stirring haka, Porirua broke away to score the game’s first try then scored two more tries in quick succession to go up 17-0.

Mana couldn’t cope with the onslaught and conceded twomore tries and a conversion to be down 29-0 by halftime.

However, they came out of the halftime talk willing to contest the breakdowns and commit to oneon-one tackles,

and Mana intercepted a pass and raced away for the second half’s first try.

But it would be the last chance Mana had of closing the points difference.

The home side scored twice more: No 8 Jamie Soapi set up teammate Mau Tealei after breaking through the line off the back of a scrum, and first fiveeighth and captain Eli Moata’a dotted down to end the game 41-5.

Porirua College hope to keep up their fine formfor their next Beard Trophy clash tomorrow, when they host Tawa College.
