We were sad to have to write about the killing of two little blue penguins this week.
The native birds had been nesting along the Whitireia Park coastline in boxes made by volunteers and had been fatally attacked, presumably by a dog.
All the people and organisations we spoke to for the story felt the same - they were preventable deaths of defenceless and special birds.
Sharing our space with wildlife is a privilege and it takes everyone in the community to keep them safe.
It’s all too easy for dogs to be given a bad name over incidents such as this but, as we know, it’s the owners that should take the condemnation.
This week we feature some of the beautiful wildlife photos from the Guardians of Pauatahanui Inlet’s annual competition.
The images are a reminder of just how lucky we are to have the birds on our doorstep.
Let’s make sure there’s always plenty of them around for us to enjoy.
