Porirua trio Jacob Gray, Jesse Hayne and Shand Cotgrove are understood to be the three men who died in a crash in Levin on Sunday morning.

They were tragically killed when the car they were in smashed into a truck in the early hours of Sunday morning and burst into flames.

All three were from Porirua, and were former students of Aotea College.

It is understood Gray and Cotgrove were in their early 20s, while Hayne is believed to have been was 18.

Friend Logan Walker said Hayne and Cotgrove were brothers.

Witnesses who tried to help those inside the car were driven back by the heat of the fire, which was so intense it melted a streetlight over the truck.

Tributes started to appear for the trio on Facebook, where they were all remembered as great people taken too soon.

‘‘Missing you heaps already son. Always with me always in my heart. Love you heaps,’’ wrote one of the victims’ fathers.

Police are working to determine the cause of the crash.
