How long does it take to smash a car window and grab what’s inside? Ten seconds?

What about taking something from a house by going through an unlocked window? A minute?

Police have noticed an increase in burglaries in Tawa and Paraparaumu during the last few months.

These are not typical crime hot spots.

Some thieves will go to a vulnerable area with the goal of finding the easiest target by looking for open windows or unlocked doors.

An open window down a driveway or at the back of a house could be the difference between one house being burgled and another not.

Other thefts are more opportunistic, and can be as simple as smashing a car window with a rock to grab whatever’s inside.

The effect of a burglary on people who never saw it coming can be heart-breaking. So don’t tempt fate. - Senior Reporter Jared Nicoll
