Arrests over car kidnaps
Two young men have been arrested in Porirua, after two suspected cases of kidnapping people in their cars.
A 26-year-old from Waitangirua and a 22-year-old from Cannons Creek will appear in Porirua District Court in October, facing various charges including unlawfully detaining someone with the intent of keeping them confined.
The 26-year-old has also been charged with using a knife to rob a man, and the 22-year-old with robbing one of the victims of a cellphone and bankcard.
The charges relate to two alleged kidnappings in the Porirua area on September 14, one of which involved a taxi driver.
Detective Sergeant David Jones, of Porirua, said there seemed to have been an ‘‘escalation’’ involving people targeting cars.
‘‘The first guy was picked up in Cannons Creek [on September 14] and driven to Tawa.
‘‘You’ve got a person parked on the side of the road. The [offenders] hop in and generally one’s got a knife.
‘‘You can imagine how traumatic it is being told to drive, not knowing what’s going to happen.’’
The victim was not physically hurt, and the taxi driver in the other incident fled his car to safety.
