For the first time ever, Mana MP Kris Faafoi will represent the area as part of a ruling government.
Before it was announced that Labour were victorious, he said his top priorities were improving housing followed by accessible health care.
Since 2010 he has been part of the opposition. Now he is in a position of significant influence, and it will be more important than ever to make sure he sticks to his word.
What an amazing time for Porirua – and locals have played a key role in delivering this opportunity by shifting the largest chunk of their vote to Labour from National since the 2014 election.
This time, the Mana electorate voted 45.4 per cent Labour compared to 36.4 per cent National.
Faafoi has been the senior Labour whip, its spokesperson for racing and tourism, and associate spokesperson for broadcasting.
We’ll soon see if he can add government minister to that CV.
