Ten young musicians from Postgate School in Whitby won first place in the Wellington Intermediate School’s Battle of the Bands competition, deputy principal Ron Morrisey said.

The five singers and five musicians, aged between 11 and 13 years old, had been rehearsing since March and were thrilled with their success.

‘‘They want to go on tour. They keep asking when they are going to play next.’’

The band was named Glasshouse Jam, because they rehearsed in a classroom with ‘‘lots of windows and a view’’, Morrisey said.

He said the competition gave children the opportunity to work with others and develop their skills.

‘‘It gives these guys a taste of stardom and the feeling of being a real rockstar for about ten minutes.’’

He thanked volunteers Vai Ioane and Wini Baxter for their time spent tutoring the musicians and students and the Music Warehouse for sponsoring the competition.
