It feels like the big cost of upgrading the city’s water system and balancing the books put a bit of a dampener on Porirua’s latest Long-Term Plan.

After deciding not to allocate $11 million to strategic property, and cutting a future fund to help revitalise Porirua East from $15 million to $8 million, here’s how the council decided to spend ratepayer money:

A $200,000 second dog park on part of Plimmerton Domain with two areas, one for small dogs and one for large.

About $280,000 to upgrade the basketball facility in Cannons Creek, and $50,000 each year for subsidised recycling in schools and preschools.

It will bring forward funding of $2.4 million to upgrade intersections at Whitford Brown Ave and Papako¯whai Road, $1.2 million at Whitford Brown Ave and Okowai Road and $0.9 million at Kenepuru Drive and Raiha Street, to prepare for the Transmission Gully link roads.

It also agreed to bring forward $400,000 in 2018/19 for the design and consenting of the pathway between Wi Neera Drive and Onepoto and to provide $2.6 million to complete construction in 2019/20.

All up, the cuts could drop your average yearly rates increase from 5.25 per cent to 5. We’ll know for sure when the council signs it all off at the end of the month.
