The Queen’s Birthday public holiday should be replaced as soon as possible.

The Queen represents the important role Britain has played in creating this country’s identity, like so many others.

Her royal family weddings are international spectacles.

But we have a limited amount of public holidays that we can use to celebrate things in this country.

Ma¯ori culture is so precious, and a lot of people beyond these islands don’t know much about it at all.

Heck, a lot of people on these islands fail to appreciate how rare and special it is.

So let’s use our public holidays to celebrate something uniquely New Zealand.

The mayor of Wellington wants Queen’s Birthday replaced with Matariki. That’s a good idea.

If we all thought about it, could we come up with an even better one? Let’s have something we can cherish, that’s more than just a day off work.
