Some of the more than 30 assorted canines and a guinea pig (centre front) with Presbyterian Minister Rev Peter Jackson (right of centre front) who conducted the annual Blessing of the Animals ceremony.

The ceremony was held in the carpark of the Presbyterian church in Ngaio Rd, Waikanae, as part of St Francis of Assisi day celebrations on Sunday, September 30.

Visitors were treated to an impromptu concert by Kapiti Brass band as they arrived, and a delicious afternoon tea later, provided by Relish cafe.

Four-footed pilgrims enthusiastically savoured a smorgasbord of animal delicacies kindly brought by Kapiti Kritters of Paraparaumu.

The bright orange sashes of Huha volunteers made them easy to spot and Vicky Broad outlined the wide range of animal advocacy services undertaken by this no-kill sanctuary.

Huhua were grateful to be offered the day’s koha.

Rev Jackson was “delighted with the response” this year which exceeded his expectations.
