Running club to mark 50 years
The Kapiti Harrier Club, now known as the Kapiti Running & Tri Club, is celebrating its first 50 years on the weekend of October 13-14.
The club was originally formed by a group of runners from the Hutt Valley, Methodist and Olympic Harrier clubs who had come to live on the coast. Membership for the first year numbered 29 and this has varied wildly over the 50 years.
Six Olympians have belonged to the club at different times and while Kapiti has often struggled against the stronger Wellington based clubs, notable interclub successes were achieved during the 1970s and 1980s.
The main event will be the anniversary dinner at the Waikanae Golf Club on Saturday, October 13.
There will be a run/walk/cycle on Saturday afternoon at 2pm in Queen Elizabeth Park and on Sunday morning there will be a brunch at the Boundary Tap and Kitchen in Raumati Beach, preceded by an optional run.
