Kapiti Judo Club had three young members compete in the Wellington Area Championships held at Wellington East Girls’ College.

It was the first time all three members had competed in a competition and all three came home with medals.

Many contestants competed for the first time from area clubs such as Kapiti.

Jimmy Bruce competed in the senior boys under 36kg division winning the bronze medal, with the division having to repeat fights due to all entrants ending the first round with the same score.

He gained the loudest cheer from the audience with his tomoe nage throw on his opponent in one fight.

Liam Wilson competed in the junior boys under 24kg, winning the gold medal. His concentration on fighting and not the audience proved successful.

Max Freshwater, a new club member this year, won the junior boys under 32kg bronze medal. Again he had to repeat fight his division due to even scores. Understanding more after the first round about the competition atmosphere he applied himself well in the second round with success.

Senior members Dima Gladkih and Russell Jones were their coaches for the day, offering advice they have gained over many years. Parents and the club are excited for all the members showing the development they have gained from consistent training this year.
