Double from defence keeps KCU unbeaten

- ADAM POULOPOULOS

With the help of two unlikely goalscorers, Kapiti Coast United overcame missed chances and a brief Waterside Karori flurry to maintain their near-pristine season record.

The club’s top men’s team won their clash 3-1 at Weka Park on Saturday, two second-half goals sealing the win after Waterside Karori grabbed an equaliser.

The win extended their record to 10 wins and two draws from 12 capital 1 matches.

They sit six points clear of second-placed Miramar Rangers.

KCU started strongly, creating several squandered chances in a first half they dominated. They had only rightback Liam Christian’s strike to show for it.

‘‘He’d never scored before this year, but this year he’s scored two goals,’’ player-coach Magno Vieira said.

Early in the second half Waterside Karori, second from bottom in the division, scored against the run of play, when a cross flew into the top corner.

The goal heralded the visitors’ best spell of the game, which Vieira said his team did well to overcome.

‘‘The players never panic. We kept playing the way we were playing, trying to retain possession of the football.’’

Centre back Fraser Lee restored KCU’s lead 20 minutes from time after a half-cleared corner, and Vieira completed the scoring five minutes later.

‘‘Normally I play the last 30 minutes. The boys do a good job to get the opposition tired,’’ he joked.

This weekend KCU are at home again facing the competition cellar-dwellers, Island Bay United.

KCU beat them 3-0 in the return fixture earlier in the season, but Vieira said he was expecting a tough outing, and some bumps and bruises.

‘‘It was a very tough game. They’re a very physical team. We can’t take them too lightly.

‘‘In this league there are a lot of young players, 17 or 18 years old, being prepared by their clubs for the first team.

‘‘This Island Bay team has a lot of experienced players, like us.’’

This weekend is a double header at Weka Park - the KCU reserves kick off at 12:30pm.

‘‘There are a lot of people coming to watch the games this year,’’ Vieira said.

‘‘It’ll be great for the community to come and support.’’
