WE SAY

Kapiti Observer - - FRONT PAGE -

We have been here before. Many times. And we will return again. Many times.

Yet again we are in the aftermath of incomprehensible violence or tragedy. No answers are forthcoming. They may never be.

By the time you read this the number of people killed in America’s worst mass shooting will, no doubt, have risen. More than 500 people were wounded. Who knows what the final toll will be.

What we do know is that this latest massacre will set off a predictable debate. America’s gun lovers will once again step forward to emulate their hero Charlton Heston; they will raise their various weapons of mass destruction and yell: ‘‘Out of my cold, dead hands.’’

And they will find a willing ally in the White House. President Donald Trump has already expressed his sympathy for the victims but he will make no moves nor sponsor any action that separates his supporters from their beloved guns.

Tens of thousands of deaths every year and all-too regular massacres are not enough to shake these zealots and their representatives from their thrall.

The only thing we know for certain is that there will be plenty of sound and fury, which will ultimately signify nothing.
