This is a suction cup used to assist vaginal births in the pushing stage, often when mum is too exhausted. “The soft silicon cup is inserted into the birth canal and placed onto the baby’s head,” says Jacqui Anderson from the New Zealand College of Midwives. “Suction is applied so that the cup is held tight against the baby’s head and the obstetrician will gently pull to help ease the baby out as the mother pushes.” The baby’s head may have a ‘cone shape’ swelling that corrects in a few days.
