My family is from Vietnam and there’s this expectation that you should know everything straight away, so it was stressful at times. I ended up pushing everyone away. The only support I really wanted was from my sister because she was born here and I could relate to her. In our culture, you have to stay indoors for three months, but I’d take the car out at night when she was asleep, just to go for a drive. Even a walk down the road by myself for fresh air helped. Hubby stayed home for a couple of months, but it was hard for him because he was new into the country. He’s from Vietnam. I talked to him before the baby was born and said, ‘This is the Kiwi way and you must do all this stuff for your wife’, so he was quite helpful. I’d chat online when I was feeding. You don’t feel like you’re alone in the world.
