My fam­ily is from Viet­nam and there’s this ex­pec­ta­tion that you should know ev­ery­thing straight away, so it was stress­ful at times. I ended up push­ing ev­ery­one away. The only sup­port I re­ally wanted was from my sis­ter be­cause she was born here and I could re­late to her. In our cul­ture, you have to stay in­doors for three months, but I’d take the car out at night when she was asleep, just to go for a drive. Even a walk down the road by my­self for fresh air helped. Hubby stayed home for a cou­ple of months, but it was hard for him be­cause he was new into the coun­try. He’s from Viet­nam. I talked to him be­fore the baby was born and said, ‘This is the Kiwi way and you must do all this stuff for your wife’, so he was quite help­ful. I’d chat on­line when I was feed­ing. You don’t feel like you’re alone in the world.
