Programme in finals
Biking is on the up and Victoria Esplanade’s Junior Road Safety Park and Palmerston North Bikes in School programme have made the finals list in the 2018 Bike to the Future Awards. Both community road safety initiatives were selected from 60 nominations nationwide in the third awards organised by the NZ Transport Agency and Cycling Action Network (CAN) for teaching safe cycling skills to over 1600 children; creating more bike-friendly future for the City. The Bikes in Schools project led by Phil Stevens of Sport Manawatu¯ was selected in the Bikes at Work and School category, while Junior Road Safety Park was recognised in the Built Excellence award category. The Park at Victoria Esplanade which was envisioned by Tash Collins and Allanah Radich, opened in 2017 and was designed to be a family friendly fun environment for children to learn about basic road safety, while gaining the skills and confidence in a low-risk setting. The winners will be announced at the 2WALK and CYCLE Conference awards dinner on Tuesday, July 31 in Palmerston North.
