Pro­gramme in fi­nals

Bik­ing is on the up and Vic­to­ria Es­planade’s Ju­nior Road Safety Park and Palmer­ston North Bikes in School pro­gramme have made the fi­nals list in the 2018 Bike to the Fu­ture Awards. Both com­mu­nity road safety ini­tia­tives were se­lected from 60 nom­i­na­tions na­tion­wide in the third awards or­gan­ised by the NZ Transport Agency and Cy­cling Ac­tion Net­work (CAN) for teach­ing safe cy­cling skills to over 1600 chil­dren; cre­at­ing more bike-friendly fu­ture for the City. The Bikes in Schools project led by Phil Stevens of Sport Manawatu¯ was se­lected in the Bikes at Work and School cat­e­gory, while Ju­nior Road Safety Park was recog­nised in the Built Ex­cel­lence award cat­e­gory. The Park at Vic­to­ria Es­planade which was en­vi­sioned by Tash Collins and Al­lanah Radich, opened in 2017 and was de­signed to be a fam­ily friendly fun en­vi­ron­ment for chil­dren to learn about ba­sic road safety, while gain­ing the skills and con­fi­dence in a low-risk set­ting. The winners will be an­nounced at the 2WALK and CYCLE Con­fer­ence awards dinner on Tues­day, July 31 in Palmer­ston North.
