Helping the regions to prosperity for all

Manawatu Guardian - - BRIDGE OVER BEAUTY - By IAIN LEES-GALLOWAY Palmerston North MP (Labour)

It’s been a year since the Coalition Government came to office — it’s been exhilarating and I’m proud of what we’ve achieved so far. There’s plenty more to do, and you can bet we’ll be working hard for all New Zealanders.

There’s a three-letter word in there that’s important: ‘all’. We’re building an economy that includes all New Zealanders, that allows us all to share in our country’s prosperity, and provide a Government that supports all New Zealanders when we need it. Let’s face it, after nine years of the favouritism shown by the previous National-led Government we all need a bit more support.

All across New Zealand we are delivering on our promises to improve housing, lift living standards, protect our environment and upgrade critical transport and other facilities. We’re rebuilding the hospitals, schools and public services that all New Zealanders rely on. And we’re responsibly managing the Government’s books — running surpluses, paying off debt, and making the sound investments we need for the future.

In among all that, Jacinda herself has also been representing New Zealand on the world stage, and welcoming Neve to the world, too.

We’re building an economy that is fit for the 21st Century and beyond. We cannot continue to rely on an economy built on population growth in a few main centres, and an overheated housing market that fewer and fewer Kiwis can afford to buy into.

That’s why we are helping our regions to prosper like our cities so more share in the rewards of economic growth. The Provincial Growth Fund has already invested over a quarter of billion dollars in creating new jobs and opportunities across the country from the far north to the deep south.

We’re also helping New Zealanders who are struggling to make ends meet. Our Families Package boosted the incomes of 384,000 families, which will reduce child poverty and help ensure New Zealand is the best country in the world to be a child.

It’s been a busy year and we’re just getting started. We’re building a New Zealand we can all be even prouder of. We’re striving towards a better New Zealand, for this generation and the next.

With your help we’re going to keep doing this. NZ leading body language expert Steph Holloway’s last events in Palmerston North were both sold out. This has led to an extra date being added to her calendar for Palmerston North. Tickets are selling fast so grab yours now!
