Na­tional’s Nick Smith has paid trib­ute to the New Zealand ser­vice­men who fought in the Bat­tle of Pass­chen­daele a cen­tury ago in Bel­gium. Smith joined other dig­ni­taries from al­lied na­tions, in­clud­ing Prince Wil­liam, Kiwi Vic­to­ria Cross re­cip­i­ent Wil­lie Api­ata and Speaker of the House David Carter, at Tyne Cot Ceme­tery, where 520 New Zealan­ders are buried.
