Marist missed out on a spot at the national club one-day championships after losing the Central Districts qualifying final to Napier Tech Old Boys.

The CD finals were at Fitzherbert Park in Palmerston North at the weekend, with the region’s top four clubs competing.

Marist beat Stoke Nayland from Nelson by 65 runs in Saturday’s semifinal, but lost to Napier Tech, the defending national club champions, by 44 runs on Sunday.

In the final, Napier Tech batted first and scored 229-7, where CD all-rounder Christian Leopard scored 42 opening the innings and former New Zealand batsman Jesse Ryder top scored with 77.

Ryder added 95 for the fourth wicket with Bronson Meehan, who made 38.

Connor Morriss was the pick of the Marist bowlers, taking 3-39 with his seamers.

None of the Marist batsmen lasted long enough for them to mount a strong enough challenge.

Opener Arana Noema-barnett, whose brother Kieran was in the Napier side, scored 25 and he had an opening stand of 41 with Whetu na Nagara, who scored 23.

At 60-1 Marist were looking solid, but then lost regular wickets and once Floyd na Nagara was out for 28 in the 44th over, leaving them at 162-8, their chances nose dived and they were all out for 185 in 46.5 overs.

Napier Tech will go on to the national finals in Auckland at the end of the season.

In Manawatu¯ club cricket on Saturday, Henry Boon scored his first century for Old Boys to put them in a strong position against

United at Manawaroa Park. United won the toss and put Old Boys into bat and Boon made the most of that decision on a wicket that did a bit early then flattened out.

Batting at No 4, Boon scored 117 as Old Boys posted 239 in 70 overs. He had assistance from Trent Mcgrath, who made 30.

United seamer Jack Harris limited the damage and took his second five-wicket bag since Christmas.

United then batted 20 overs to be 52-4 at stumps, with Old Boys medium pacer Tim Richards taking 2-17.
