Counties Manukau Sporting Excellence Awards at the Vodafone Event Centre in Manukau on Sunday once again highlighte­d all the amazing talent within this region.

Charlie Faumuina’s historic win as only the second rugby player to win Counties Manukau’s supreme athlete of the year also highlighte­d the strength of the region’s sporting talent given who he beat for the prize.

Sportsman of the year - Charlie Faumuina, Sportswoma­n of the year - Valerie Adams, Coach of the year - Darryl Suasua, Club of the year - Papakura Sea Eagles Rugby League Club. Top team of the year - Manukau Outriggers Vaka Manu open men’s team. Masters award - Maeve Morrison (Southern Districts Hockey). Referee/umpire/official of the year - Jessica Beard. Administra­tor of the year - Martin Peat (Counties Manukau Orienteeri­ng Club. Volunteer of the year - Rod Macgregor (Waiuku Tennis Club). Junior sportsman of the year - Jason Matthews (baseball). Junior sportswoma­n of the year - Tupou Neiufi (Paralympic swimming). Junior team of the year - Southern Cross Campus 1st XIII boys’ rugby league team. Secondary school of the year - Aorere College. Primary/intermedia­te school of the year - Holy Cross School (Papatoetoe).
