Dance crew heading to Mangere

Manukau Courier - - YOUR LOCAL NEWS - EMILY FORD

It’s not just hip hop dancing, it’s a theatre experience. That’s the aim of Freshmans Dance Crew, a group of dancers who combine their love of dance and theatre for interactive performances.

The crew is coming to Mangere Arts Centre as part of Auckland Live’s Pick & Mix programme to teach children and adults how to dance.

Director Hadleigh Pouesi says it’s a great opportunity to invest a love of dance in children, as it wasn’t an option for him as a child.

‘‘If this was around back when I was growing up then I would have been all for it. I’ve always had a passion for performance,’’ Pouesi says.

‘‘It’s fun working with young people who’ve never tried dancing before and just seeing their eyes light up.

‘‘For a short glimpse of time we get to invest in them and take that and make it into a lifetime passion.’’

Pouesi established Freshmans Dance Crew in 2012 with a goal of providing professional pathways for dancers.

This is the first year the crew has been involved with Pick & Mix, which is a winter series of performances and workshops. The crew is performing from 3pm at Mangere Arts Centre on September 2.
