This week

Marlborough Express - The Saturday Express, Marlborough - - EXPRESS ROUNDUP -

The Saturday Express has two tickets to give away to Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance 3D. To enter the draw, clip this item and deliver it with your name, address and daytime telephone number on the back of an envelope to Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance 3D Giveaway, Saturday Express, P O Box 242, Blenheim 7240, by Wednesday. Winners will be published in The Marlborough Express on Friday. We’re all going to grow old (hopefully) and will very likely need care.

If your family can’t manage then you will probably end up in a rest home.

There you will be looked after by the staff who, despite being dedicated to such an important job, are not paid very much.

In fact senior caregiver Jan Cook, in sole charge on her shift, was on $14 an hour.

It’s a thorny issue and Blenheim registered nurse Allison Lomax examines both sides on page 4 today.

We also find that the people we spoke to about rest home care had little idea how much staff were paid.

Allison says it’s time to put a plan in place to address aged care issues, and she’s right.

We all need to be part of this debate because it’s going to directly affect us, one day.
