Fashion expert helps uncover ‘treasures’
Finding fashionable, good quality clothes on a tight budget can be challenging, but a Blenheim stylist is offering her expert advice, for free.
Jackie Halliday, who runs fashion styling business Dress Code, is inviting nominations from Marlburians who know someone on a shoestring budget to take to second-hand shops and uncover clothing ‘‘treasures’’ to make them look smart and feel great.
‘‘The reason I’m offering it is because fashion is a passion and I don’t think everything you do in life should be about making money. One pleasure I get from my little business is dressing people on a budget.’’
Jackie says an op shop can be daunting with so much choice available.
‘‘I’ve got a good eye in an op shop and I’ll go straight for a good label. It doesn’t even need to be a label, I’ll pick out the quality stuff - it’ll be something that suits their body shape, so they’ll come out looking great.’’
She hopes to show people how they can stretch just a few dollars to a number of outfits for different occasions by mixing and matching jackets and scarves with pants or jeans, or a dress.
‘‘I’d have a poke around the day before and choose some pieces to save time and then take my client. I would have chosen clothes for their body shape and their colour palette.’’
Jackie hopes that showing her client what clothes work best for them, and why, will leave them with the know-how and confidence to shop smartly in the future, whatever their budget.
‘‘Once you’ve got that you can carry on.’’
Fashion styling is a passion Jackie enjoys when she’s not at work as a phlebotomist at Wairau Hospital’s Medlab.
‘‘I take my uniform off and I change my brain to not think about veins ... It’s a wonderful variation.’’ She first found fashion while working at Thomas’s, in Blenheim, and when she left, clients tracked her down seeking her advice.
To take it a step further, Jackie completed a short stylist course in Auckland and returned to set up Dress Code.
‘‘From there I haven’t stopped. I thought I’d only get a few people a year, but I get new people on stream each week and in a small town like Blenheim, that’s amazing.’’
