Young people in Marlborough have aspirations to help protect the planet and conserve New Zealand’s natural heritage, according to a new survey.

Questioned as part of a special nationwide survey, hundreds of children from across the region wanted to have their hopes for the future heard.

More than 5000 Kiwi kids took part in the inaugural Sir Peter Blake Trust Dream Bank as part of the Trust’s annual Red Socks Day celebrations

Organisers say hundreds of young people in Marlborough aged between 5 and 18 years-old answered the question, ‘My dream for NZ’

The Environment category proved to be the most popular, with those surveyed commenting on how they wanted to help stop global warming, save endangered species and care for forests, oceans and waterways.

More than 10,000 dreams were received, with some of the organisers favourite dreams coming from Marlborough.

Sir Peter Blake Trust CEO Shelley Campbell says the survey gave a detailed insight into what children wanted the future to look like.

‘‘It was really heartening to see that kids today aren’t just thinking about their own wants and needs but also about how they can actively contribute to the happiness and wellbeing of those around them.

‘‘We’ve seen a strong focus on the environment, with one in three young Kiwis dreaming of solving key issues such as global warming, the amount of plastic and rubbish in our oceans and waterways, deep sea mining, and the survival of endangered species like our native kiwi,’’ she says.

One submission by a Marlborough 12-year-old read how she wanted to be the youngest New Zealander to go on tour and travel the world playing guitar and singing. ‘‘Travelling the world doing what I love most; playing my guitar, singing and stopping people in their tracks with my maths equations.

‘‘I also want to be the goal-shooter for the Silver Ferns and invent a medicine to cure multiple sclerosis.’’

The survey showed the most popular dreams job overall were to be a vet, teacher, singer, doctor, YouTuber and designer.

Popular sporting dreams included being a top rugby player or All Black, followed by netballer or Silver Fern.
