One of the best things about working in the news industry is constantly being exposed to different points of view. Everyone has their own way of seeing the world and it’s always good to challenge your own beliefs and look at things from another perspective.
Our regular updates from Blenheim’s own Mr Gay NZ Ricky Devine White are a great example. In a world where sexuality and gender identities are more diverse than ever before, it’s helpful to have someone explain the ABCs of LGBTQI in layman’s terms as he’s done this week (see page 6).
It’s especially significant in a week where comments from Australian rugby star Israel Folau about people ‘‘burning in hell’’ for their choice of partner has put the spotlight on gay rights and religion.
Folau’s views are worth considering and everyone is entitled to their opinion, however hateful or offensive it might seem. Differing viewpoints spark discussion and debate, helping us all to learn more about complicated and controversial issues.
