I was excited this week to have a go racing in the Top of the South Trade Academy students’ go-kart and relive a bit of my youth, but alas, it was not meant to be.
The automotive engineering students got to practice a bit of new-found troubleshooting skills on the unresponsive go-kart...the verdict, out of fuel. It happens to the best of us! The inclusion of trade-based training in NZQA is a fantastic addition, tailoring educational opportunities to students’ interests and giving them ‘‘real world’’ skills can only be a good thing.
I had an excellent chat with ultra-endurance cyclist Craig Harper, mainly about the mental challenges associated with competing in ultra-endurance events.
He said it wasn’t about being ‘mentally tough’ but more about having techniques to overcome the barriers - a lot of things you can’t just tough through...good advice that applies to many situations.
Sadly, we couldn’t fit the Wee Wonders in this week - but watch out for the kids returning in next Saturday’s edition of the Saturday Express. Oh, and remember, the clocks go forward one hour on Sunday.
