Pedestrian dies

Marlborough Express - - NEWS -

A pedestrian hit by a car in Blenheim has died in hospital. Joseph Bertogg, 30, was hit by a car at the intersection of Colemans Rd and Orchard Lane, in Springlands, shortly before 6.30am on June 19. He was flown to Wellington Hospital in a critical condition. The Blenheim man was transferred back to Wairau Hospital on Friday. He died on Saturday. A family spokeswoman said Joseph enjoyed a colourful life, which was cut short by a tragic accident. Colemans Rd was closed for six hours as police conducted a serious crash investigation on June 19. Marlborough community Constable Russ Smith said the investigation was ongoing but there were some factors that may have contributed to the crash. ‘‘The pedestrian in this case was wearing dark clothing and was on the road when he was struck,’’ he said. ‘‘It doesn’t matter how careful you are crossing the road during the hours of darkness or in low-light conditions, there is always a risk that a motorist will not see you.’’ A funeral service will be held on Thursday.
