Kennedy gets nod for Sports Awards

Alex Kennedy is the ta­ble ten­nis nom­i­nee for the 2017 Marl­bor­ough Sports Awards after pro­duc­ing yet an­other highly-suc­cess­ful sea­son.

At the Marl­bor­ough Open in May he qual­i­fied in the men’s sin­gles, won the un­der-18 dou­bles and was run­ner-up in the un­der-18 sin­gles.

In June, he took out the un­der18 sin­gles and dou­bles at the Nel­son Open and also won the un­der21 dou­bles.

The 17-year-old was the fourth seed in the boys un­der-18 sin­gles at the South Is­land cham­pi­onships in Nel­son in Au­gust, reach­ing the semi fi­nals of the boys sin­gles and win­ning the D grade dou­bles. In lo­cal play he won the closed sin­gles ti­tle for a sec­ond time, after first pre­vail­ing as a 15-year-old in 2015.

He com­piled a su­perb record in in­ter­club play, win­ning 50 out of 51 matches.

Kennedy won five out of eight matches in the South Is­land un­der18 teams tour­na­ment in June and forged an un­beaten record as Marl­bor­ough beat Nel­son in the ju­nior rep match for the An­gell Shield. He also played at num­ber two in the se­nior men’s rep team.

His con­tri­bu­tion is not re­stricted to play­ing, Kennedy giv­ing his time freely to help coach ju­nior play­ers.
