Mother-son combo wins the best steak
The country’s most succulent sirloin steak comes from a simmental cattle beast farmed by Wairoa simmental breeders Colleen and Jon Knauf.
The mother and son combination beat 266 other entrants from around New Zealand to be named grand champion for this year’s Steak of Origin contest at Fieldays at Mystery Creek.
Colleen said the win was completely unexpected.
‘‘It’s just fantastic.
‘‘This is the pinnacle of our breeding.
‘‘It’s why we breed, to get this shield and the recognition for our work.
‘‘For simmental – a European breed – to win when angus and other breeds have done so well in the past is fantastic,’’ Colleen said.
‘‘My son Jon deserves a lot of credit for this, he’s really good with his stock.
‘‘It was thought to be the first time cattle from the simmental breed had won the contest.
