Parent course wins praise

Marlborough Midweek - - Front Page -

Being a parent is seldom a walk in the park, but thanks to the Barnardos-run Incredible Years course over a dozen Marlborough mums can tackle each day with renewed confidence.

Thirteen mums, including one grandmother, took on the 14-week course which aims to equip parents with the tools to better raise their kids.

For one mum, Sarah Edmonds, taking the course was a choice well made.

‘‘It’s the best decision I ever made.

‘‘ I was struggling a bit with managing my kids’ behaviour so I rang up Barnardos for some advice and they suggested I do this course.

‘‘It’s helped me with so many things like learning how to play effectively with my children and I also understand children a lot better,’’ the mum of two says.

Another mum Jody Edwards says she found the course not only helpful with raising her 5 and 3-year-old but her 13 and 12-yearold as well.

‘‘I was skeptical at first because I did it to help me with my older kids and I didn’t think it could help, but it has been amazing,’’ Jody says.

Even though she lives in Ward Jody made the weekly drive to Blenheim to attend the 21⁄ hour

2 course.

‘‘ It was definitely worth the travel cost. I would recommend this course to anyone.’’

Barnardos Marlborough family support worker and course facilitator Cath Walker says she has been hugely impressed with the class at the course.

‘‘We have all worked really well together and made some great friendships, which I hope the mums keep.

‘‘They have been very dedicated to stick with the course for the full 14 weeks,’’ she says.

A graduation was held for the mums on Wednesday last week.

The course was developed in the US and is funded in New Zealand by the Ministry of Education.
