Joy in fronting up with top band
Good times: Blenheim Country Music Club member Ange Cook took the runnerup spot in the overall senior category at the 25th annual Golden Valley Country Music Awards in Pohara, Takaka. She also took first in female gospel as well as second in female open, song writing, rock’n’roll and yodelling. ‘‘The thrill of playing my guitar and singing with a top band of experienced musicians was the highlight for me,’’ she says. Ange wasn’t the only Marlborough musician to do well, with Winston Knight winning male open and getting second in male gospel while the club’s youngest member Sally Cook, 11, took second in the junior open and junior gospel. Fellow Blenheim club member Laura Lowe won rock’n’roll and took second in instrumental, while Laura Lowe, Chris Whitnell and Melinda Goodger won the country group category. Another highlight for the Marlburians was the return of former club member to Marlborough country musician Matt McNeilly from Australia to perform as a special guest musician in the house band.
